Thursday, August 8, 2019

The University of Kansas Libraries will open a new exhibition in the Haricombe Gallery this September. “Strong Foundations: 100 Years of Hispanism at the University of Kansas” celebrates the 100thanniversary of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

The exhibition will feature interdisciplinary scholarship, collections and creative works representing the century-long legacy of the department. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese has a rich and relevant history at KU. Developed through the determination of forward thinking leaders, the scholarly contributions of multidisciplinary researchers and a deep breadth of curated research and study collections, the department has long been committed to research and education excellence and the promotion of cultural understanding

The opening reception will be held Thursday, September 12, in Watson Library, Third Floor West. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception, followed by remarks at 6:15 p.m. by Benjamin Fraser, professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Arizona.

“KU Libraries are honored to celebrate the century-long legacy of KU's Department of Spanish and Portuguese,” said Sarah Goodwin Thiel, coordinator of the Haricombe Gallery exhibitions program. “The exhibition is filled with color and history and showcases wide-ranging scholarship and collections from across our campus.”

This event is free and open to the public. Those who plan to attend may RSVP online at rockcha.lk/Strong or to Kelly Spavin at libevents@ku.edu by Thursday, September 5.

Exhibitions in KU Libraries’ Haricombe Gallery are collaborative in nature. They are designed to promote the creative scholarship of our campus community and highlight the strength of the libraries’ collections.

The exhibition will be on display until January 2020. Find out more information on KU Libraries’ exhibits at lib.ku.edu/exhibits.
